The Bartalos von Varbogya received repeated confirmation of their nobility during the past centuries and the property in Mad was sold only a short time ago by a member of this family."

(in English: Hungarian Clan Notebook, Part Two: Noble Families).

In volume one of "Noble Families" on page 111 starts an entry entitled "Bogyay" and continues to page 117. It begins with a short family history and continues with genealogical information. The first sentence says in Hungarian "The family originally lived in Nagymad in Pozsony County and in Varbogya in Komarom County and its original name was Bartalos."

It continues by saying that "The family descended without interruption from Gergely, who resided in Varbogya [this statement is incorrect - mkb] and who had a son Gyorgy, who relocates to Zala County, the son of which, Jozsef, marries Krisztina Csuzy of Pusztaszentmihaly and dies in 1752. Gyorgy became commander of the castle at Sumeg and was deeded (the localities of) Halap, Puszta-Dorogd, Uj-Dorogd and Sarmellek in which localities the family is still landowner." This is followed by the description of their coat of arm, statement as to their religion - it is roman catholic - and a pedigree showing the decent of all of the then living members from Mr. Jozsef Bogyay and his wife Ms. Krisztina Csuzy.

All volumes of this impressive work are on open shelf in the history reading room of the Orszagos Szechenyi Konyvtar in Budapest .

The first known modern spelling of Barthalos, dates from 1522 and is found in an order issued by the Palatine of Transylvania, Janos Szapolyai (or Zapolya), who later became King John I. (I. Janos kiraly). In this order he is directing Johann "Barthalos de felchernad" and Alex "Fejes de Alchernad" to conduct fact finding in the case of Michael "Damonkos de Chernathon" against Mojse de Angelos. Today Felchernad is known as Felsocsernaton in Hungarian. It is a village located in the Szekely region of Transylvania (now Romania ) and its current Rumanian name is Cernat or Cernatu de Sus (Lelkes, page 200, 1998). The above mentioned order was issued at Prazsmar (Prasmar in Latin, Prejmer in Rumanian) and dated July 1, 1522.

Please note: It is not certain whether this Janos Bartalos was a member of the Bart(h)alos family in the Csallokoz. or belonged to another Bart(h)alos family.

I was provided with a copy of the title page and item 45 of the book "A Magyarorszagi Reformatus Egyhaz Egyetemes Nevtara az 1913-15. Evekre" (in English: "General Register of the Calvinist Church in Hungary for the Years 1913-15.")

Under number 45 is a brief listing of the congregation of Szap. It is overflown with abbreviations for which, unfortunately, I do not posses the key. Thus my comprehension of the information contained therein is limited. The year 1600 probably refers to official registration of the church followed by 1745 in parenthesis. I know from other sources that 1745 happened to be the year from which vital records are available and therefore this entry might be a reference to that. The very last item in this six line entry reads: "g. Barthalos Lajos."

THALY, Kalman: “Baro Heolgyi – csalad”. Turul, 1890, page 150.

The subject of this article is the Baron Heolgyi or Holgye family. Therein reference is made to "Nagy-Madi Barthaloss Istvan foldbirtokos es elokelo gyori ugyved" and "a gr. Batthyanyak, Amadek, Viczayak jogi tanacsosa" (Isvan Barthaloss of Nagy-Mad landowner and distinguished lawyer of the city of Gyor" and "legal advisor to Counts Batthyanys, Amades, Viczays". This Bartalos was a member of our family, born in Szap in 1768 and died in Szap in 1821. In his death certificate his occupation is given as judge of the royal court of appeals of the County of Gyor (" Gyor megye kiralyi tablabiroja"). He is mentioned in this article because he was the husband of Lidia Holgye (1772-1821). I might add, which is not in the article, that they had two children, Katalin who was born in 1808 and Lajos who died in 1821 at the age of 11 years. We lack records as to what happened to Katalin who by age 13 became totally orphaned and lost her brother too. They are included in the pedigree Bartalos Family which can be viewed on the internet (at www.rootsweb.com, www.ancestry.com and www.genealogy.com).

I came to realize that the mother of the well-known Hungarian writer and historian Kalman Thally was a Katalin Barthaloss of Nagymad. I located the Thally family history and family tree in Ivan Nagy’s book: Magyarorszag csaladai czimerekkel es nemzekrendi tablakkal. In this book Katalin’s birthdate is not given. Her husband, Lajos Thally lived from 1794 to 1850. They are listed to have six children, all boys, of whom the writer Kalman was the second oldest. The birth dates are not given for all the children, except for Kalman, who was born in 1839. These data suggest that Kalman Thally’s mother might be the surviving daughter of the jurist Istvan Bartalos of Szap (1768 – 1820) and Baroness Lidia Holgye (1772 – 1821) who, as mentioned above, lost her parents and only brother when she was 13. If so, her year of birth is 1808.
